The Ballad Singer, a narrated graphic experience from Italian developer Curtel Games, is now available as a Steam Early Access title for PC and Mac.
Inspired by the choose-your-own-adventure genre of books, The Ballad Singer features a story that "gets written" as the player makes choices throughout the game. Curtel Games says this allows players to experience as many as 1,700 stories and 40 different endings in the Kickstarter-funded fantasy title. Furthermore, every development and subplot in the player's story are completely narrated and illustrated.
"We would like to thank the over 1,100 Kickstarter backers of The Ballad Singer, as it is because of them that we managed to succeed in the campaign and launch on Steam," says Riccardo Bandera, Project Manager, Curtel Games. "We know it is difficult to go from a Kickstarter campaign to public release, so we are even more proud and grateful to our backers. The gaming experience of The Ballad Singer is very special, with all the different narrative paths that we have created, each player will have a unique and personal experience. Whether you achieve one of the final stages or not, you will have built a one-of-a-kind and exciting experience."
The game uses what Curtel Games calls a "Domino System" which allows players to live thousands of different narratives. These paths will change according to the player's actions, the characters they have selected, and their progress or failures. Based on chaos theory, it's a branching system in which a small change often leads to unexpected consequences that can affect all characters. Each event results in numbers of consequences affecting the entire Hesperia world and changing the whole game ecosystem.
The Ballad Singer is available now through Steam Early Access with the final version scheduled to come out in November $22.99 USD.
