First look: 'Prisma & the Masquerade Menace' (PC)

Greenlit on Steam and currently on Kickstarter, the Shiny Bolt developed platformer Prisma & the Masquerade Menace is a platfomer of a different color...err...colors.

Built upon a base that's typical for side-scrolling puzzle platformers, Prisma is set in a colorful, yet dangerous, multi-dimensional world.  While most games of its ilk tend to focus on hopping from platform to platform and jumping onto baddies, this game takes a different approach.  Players utilize color-coded powers such as the blue high jump, yellow dash, and red punch to make it through each level's map.  While it sounds hokey, it's actually a very interesting mechanic that makes Prisma seem quite a bit different from the bulk of the platformers currently on the market.

Playing through the first five stages, the game seems to cradle the player into the swing of things without coming off as dull or simplistic.  Rather, the levels can be fairly challenging as players swap from color to color to make platforms and obstacles appear and disappear as they coordinated with their assigned color.  Sometimes this has to be done quite quickly as the game can move fairly fast from time to time.  Thankfully (in the build we were able to play), there are plenty of checkpoints throughout each level should the player screw things up.

Messing up wasn't so bad as there was no finite life total to deplete with each failure.  We're not sure if this will hold true once the game releases (the estimated release window is Dec. 2017), but we can see both pluses and minuses should Shiny Bolt look to keep the infinite lives concept in the finished product.

It's recommended that players have an Xbox controller for their computer to play this game, though it is fully playable with keyboard.  We played it using the keyboard because the build of the game we were provided did not seem to have support for our third-party gamepad.  If anything, it made the game that much more challenging for us.

As it stands, Prisma & the Masquerade Menace will be a PC/Mac/Linux release.  There is a possibility that the game could also wind up on consoles, but that's a stretch goal on Kickstarter (and not exactly a lower level one).
