The Professor Layton series has released many puzzle/mystery games over the years, but has been on hiatus since 2014, with the releases of Azran Legacy and Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright. At E3 that was no more, as Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy showed that the series still has a kick to it.
At an E3 event, Level-5 showed the world he's back – but this time with a new twist. Professor Layton has gone missing this time around, and it's up to his daughter, Katrielle, to find him. Despite not having too much information out yet, this is proving to be a good dynamic. The "child going after a missing parent" plot is always a good one, and even with cartoon graphics, it's a very real loss and a really big source of determination. Plus you have a talking dog with you, and that's always a good thing.
Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspracy is coming out for iOS and Android in July, with the 3DS verson later in the year. The puzzles look smart, the mystery is very much a determination factor, the new lead is a breath of fresh air, and the normal haze and dialogue of enigma are always there. Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy is shaping up to be a welcome return for the franchise.
